Biography: Niccolo dell’Arca hailed from southern Italy but spent the majority of his career in Bologna, first documented there in 1462. He was named after his contribution to the Arca di S. Domenico, carving a marble canopy and some small statues for the shrine. After his death in 1494, some of his work was still unfinished and was completed by Michelangelo. His greatest artistic accomplishment was his terracotta, painted, group sculpture entitled the Lamentation over the Body of Christ, which is located in the S. Maria della Vita in Bologna.
